Criteria for Applicants

In order for older Irish born emigrants to access Housing Association properties for the older person in Ireland they no longer have to satisfy the condition that they are included or have been accepted for inclusion in the local authority assessment of housing need.

Instead the following criteria will apply:

Applicants have to be included on the Safe-Home waiting list and assessed by the Programme.

They must be close to or over 60 years of age and returning to their county of origin or a county where they have strong verifiable links.

They must currently be living in either existing social housing (e.g. local authority, housing association etc) or private rented accommodation in their country of residence, and

Their circumstances must be such that they could not provide suitable accommodation for themselves out of their own resources on their return.

Application Process

If you fulfil the criteria outlined above, the first step in the process is to contact us for an application form and information pack.

Once we receive the completed paperwork from you, your application will be processed and you will be included on our waiting list.

Safe Home does not manage or build any properties of our own. We operate on a referral basis between our applicants and Housing Associations for older people throughout the country.

In our experience Housing Associations that we deal with will generally only consider applications from individuals originally from their area or having a close link with their area.

Where Housing Associations are willing to consider applications from returning emigrants, we will send out an information sheet (click below for samples) on the scheme to qualifying applicants on our list. On receipt of the information sheet (if an applicant is interested in being considered for a property) we will refer their details on to the Housing Association for consideration. Most Housing Associations will require applicants to travel for interview.

The final decision on who is allocated a property lies with the Housing Association.
