The Long Road Home...

Ag Siúl le Chéile

Our annual fundraising walk along the National Famine Way begins at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin’s Docklands and finishes at Strokestown Park | National Famine Museum in Co. Roscommon.

Fundraising Walk

The National Famine Way is a 165km trail, mostly along the Royal Canal, that traces the footsteps of the Strokestown tenants, men, women, and children, who were forcibly marched from Roscommon to Dublin in 1847 after failing to pay their rent. From Dublin, they boarded ships to Liverpool before continuing on to North America on board some of the most worst coffin ships of the time. Tragically, many did not survive the journey and are remembered as the “Missing 1490.”

For the past three years, we have walked the route in reverse, from Dublin to Roscommon symbolising our work in helping Irish emigrants return home as well as to raise funds to support our work. Each step along this trail is both a tribute to the resilience of those who left Ireland and a commitment from Safe Home Ireland to support those who want to return home.

This annual fundraising walk not only helps to raise funds but also raises Safe Home’s profile, through significant media coverage and partnerships with key stakeholders, including EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum , The National Famine Way and The National Famine Museum Strokestown Park.

In 2026, we will walk the route over the weekend of 23rd and 24th May
